And the country gets dumber

Proof that our country is forgetting that we're America: link

This kinda stuff really just gets my goat. Weasel my hampsters, even! And I saw this on foxnews tonight. These people were fined for swimming in the SAME WATER as seals..

I'm sorry....but.... this country just bugs me. Especially the sports team thing. Thats just stoopid....
While we're at it:

Redskins - HEAVENS NO!
Sharks - oh no....people are afraid of sharks. Can't use that as a team name
Braves - Ha...same as redskins
Patriots - DISTINCTLY reminds me of anti-England sentiments....which makes me angry. I like England. Name change.
Raiders - This alludes to plundering and stealing. Not appropriate.
Bears/Dolphins/Wolverines/Falcons/Eagles... - wildlife? being portrayed as a SPORTS team? Barbaric. The animals' feelings might get hurt!
Giants/Nuggets - this could make other people feel small....or big...and that's just wrong too.

as you can see...we could all probably make good arguments that would support the banning of just about every single team name any college/high school/middle school/private club/rec group/professional sport/etc could use as it's own.

GRRRR.

Yes, because nothing says America more than cheesy sports team names and logos. I have to say, as a person with strong Native American descent, I support this ban - and I wish it could go all the way.

I mean, honestly, you see nothing wrong with this, but what if there was a sports team named the Coons and their mascot was a smiling blackface icon? To some people, the Redskins and their mascot is just as bad, and understandably so.

I defer to Descarte.

Coons, I get. But in the end, I feel like things are being taken too far. 'Redskins' for instance, I do not see as derrogatory. It was a descriptive term which came from the "red man" ... the accuracy of it is certainly much closer to reality than referring to someone with dark skin as a "coon." Picking apart a single defense such as that which you propose is folly, I know, but it gives me some relief to pick on the particulars ;)

I myself am 1/32 - perhaps not QUITE good enough to qualify for some of the scholarships, but enough that I'm willing to claim it. I take no offense personally to the reference. In the same way, I wouldn't be at all offended if a team were named the "Drunken Irish." Perhaps I just don't get as easily offended as some, that point I'm willing to concede.

My primary point of argument is that over the past 50 years, the past 5+ in particular, it seems as though America is so incredibly worried about being politically correct and equal and fair and everything is hunky-dory that we're starting to lose some of our identity and become a country full of non-gendered, non-heritage, spineless jellyfish that are so worried about hurting each others feelings that we throw common sense to the sidelines.

Perhaps I'm an uber-conservative christian nazi...but when I hear things like "we're not going to allow any more offensive mascots....." it bothers me. Everything can be offensive to someone. Period. I wish Americans would stop pouting and get some friggin thicker skin. We're all a bunch of cry babies and it bothers me. Our country is continually dropping it's standards for compromise, it's morals for majority and it's ethics for laissez-faire decisions/ethics. For the all the growing out our country has done, we sure do have a lot of growing up to do.

Okay, first, what were you doing watching Fox News? I mean, they're good for a laugh, but methinks you aren't watching Fox News for a laugh.

I, also, think this ban is pretty weak. We have real things to worry about in this world and we're going to sweat over things like this? It reminds me of an episode of West Wing...Charlie, the young black kid, was going to apply for another job and they put him as the Presidential aid...or his body man. And they started to worry how it would look if a young black man held open doors for a white rich man and carried his luggage. They ask the black Joint Chiefs of Staff and he basically says he has some real things to worry about and he doesn't have time for this kind of stuff.

I semi-understand the "offense" that is taken. However, it's part of our heritage and it is not about to leave. And the fact that the Florida State Seminoles (how is that offensive, btw?) is one of the teams that will have to change their logo come NCAA playoff time borders on asinine. Seriously, do we really need to worry about this stuff? Why not talk about Robert Novak saying "bullshit" on live TV. At least that's friggin hilarious.

Ha...still makes me laugh. That douche.
