Internet Stuff
_geek_ (consider yourself warned)
At work, I'm trying to find ways to build "cooler" websites. Right now we use Microsoft SharePoint. SharePoint basically lets you store your data, files, etc online. It does much more than that, but the heart of SharePoint is holding your information.

SharePoint supports lots of types of documents. One of the things I'm looking into is creating interactive documents on SharePoint. Animations. Graphs. Charts. These kinds of things. I've found two main contenders:

Microsoft Silverlight and Adobe Flex.

I don't know if anyone who reads this knows anything about either one, but from what I've gathered they both do essentially the same thing. You know those little games on the internet that you can play? They likely use Adobe Flash. (you use Adobe Flex to create Adobe Flash files). Silverlight is a younger product, but has potential.

What does this mean? I'm going to see if I can't start developing stuff in these to make cool web applications and websites. We'll see.

Will the weather ever be cooperative at the right time of day? It certainly doesn't feel like it! I went for my deposition ... early last week? The week before that? Something like that.

I'm going to look into using Shutterfly.com to store my pictures. Anyone know the differences between them and Flickr?

I prefer Flickr for web stuff, although honestly if it's just to SEE pics, I use Facebook. There's a link on each of your albums to share them with nonFacebook users, and it has worked well for me.

For ordering paper prints of photos, I use Snapfish. It's cheap and they've come out in very good quality so far. Happy enough with that, if I don't mind waiting 5 days or so for them to come in the mail. It's definitely a higher quality print job than, say, Walmart.com 1-hour pickup.

On Silverlight vs. Adobe...

MLB.com recently switched to Adobe and there are pros and cons. The major con is slower connections simply can't use the program at all. I bought a subscription to radio to listen to the Braves. $15, pretty awesome deal. I had used someone else's subscription before and knew my connection could handle it. In spring training, my connection handled it, no problem. But MLB signed a new deal with Adobe on opening day and have had many problems with the program. The feedback forum is full of people complaining.

Not sure if that helps in any way, but figured I would throw that out. MLB had bad things to say about silverlight, but if I remember correctly, adobe is a bigger resource hog.

*shrugs*

With the weather warming up, I'm planning on catching a few ballgames in Lynchburg. Want to go sometime?
